Our family’s involvement with this farm began after my grandparents, Michael ‘Mike’ Doherty and Mary Cafferky, returned home from the USA and UK respectively. They met and married shortly thereafter, and subsequently purchased the farm in the early 1950s. Over the following decades the farm developed into a successful dairy business and my parents, Gerald and Marie (Brennan), added to the existing farm with the purchase of what we refer to as ‘Gethins’ and ‘Little’s Joes’, to bring the farm to its current form.
In Quarryfield, the day to day running of the farm is taken care of by my father Gerald, sister Kelly and I. Kelly also runs an English Language business called Sligo Language, as well as an Airbnb property, ‘The Granary’, alongside the farm activities.
With the purchase of Knightfield Mena (Touchdown x Irco Mena) in the Spring of 2013, our showjumping breeding programme began. Prior to this, horses and ponies had only been in Quarryfield in a leisure capacity. Our current broodmares have been carefully selected from top performance families in Ireland and continental Europe with a focus on breeding showjumpers for international sport.
